Dear Haya can you tell us more about the ivory , Ottoman ? dagger hilt on the cover of Dar Al Athar 2011 season's greeting.I have tried to find some information on it online but had no luck. thanks Dan
This ivory piece comes from the period of the Mughals in India. The sword hilt is carved from walrus ivory and is inlaid with gold. It dates from 1634-35 AD. The hilt is beautifully decorated in gold with arabesque, zoomorphic (animal forms) and epigraphic (inscriptions) designs. Its dimensions are 110 mm in length and the width is 39 mm.
This ivory object was part of the "Treasury of the World: Jewelled Arts of India in the Age of the Mughals" exhibition.
If you are interested in details of the craftsmanship of the Mughal court or their weaponry, I would be more than happy to provide you with more information.
